Ensuring sufficient medical care in Spain is
imperative. To not do so is folly and leaves
many exposed to medical bills they are
simply unable to pay.  Recent changes in the
Valencia Region has left thousands without
cover.  This is particularly so for those on an
E106.  Pensioners are not affected.

Everyone has probably read all the
literature required to ensure that they have
medical care when living in Spain.  It seems
to be straightforward but there are always
pitfalls and the bureaucracy makes what
should be a simple process complicated.

Many opt for private medical care.  This is a
good thing if you are under retirement age
and not working.  There are a number of
excellent policies giving peace of mind.

If you are registered as Self Employed in
Spain and paying Social Security you are
covered for medical care and so are your
spouse and children.  If you have a work
contract then you may apply to have your
spouse included.  It is not guaranteed and
there is paperwork and a visit to the town
hall and social security office to do this.

If you are not working you now do not
have any entitlement to medical cover since
changes in the law although it

is believed that those on an E106 will receive
cover until it expires this cannot be
guaranteed since the law was changed in
June 2008 by the Valencian government.

If you are registered at the INSS (Social
Security)  you can then apply for a SIP card.
If you wish to add a spouse or relative then
you must obtain all the relevant paperwork
and present that with copies.  You then need
to register at the Medical Centre where you
will be given your SIP card.

Historically medical centres have given SIP
cards without really taking in to account the
applicants status.  This is now not the case
meaning that not all people who apply and
their spouse will be entitled to cover.

It should be stressed that the card is only
valid if you are paying Social Security.  There
is a short period of grace upon finishing work.

If you are entitled to receive benefits
because of the length of time you have
worked then your entitlement continues.

There are many thousands of British people
living along the Costa Blanca who presume
they will receive medical treatment if things go
wrong.  This simply is not the case and is
costly should you find yourself ill.
